Blacksmithing – basic course

   Participants learn the basics of blacksmithing, the nature of fire, how to care for the fire, use of the anvil and the blacksmith‘s tools.  They find out how to work with glowing iron or steel to create unique pieces and make e.g. hooks, candlesticks, spikes (nails) and various other small items.  Experienced blacksmiths can also practice and recieve guidance from Beate concerning more complicated items.  

   Beate is an experienced teacher.  She has won many competitions, is the Nordic Champion of Blacksmithing and multiple Icelandic Champion.  She has taught and exhibited widely and operates her own blacksmith workshop at Kristnes in Eyjafjörður.  Price kr. 20.000.-  all material included. 25% discount for children younger than 18 accompanied by adult.  Starts 1 pm, Friday July 27.  at The Technical Museum, Seyðisfjörður.

PRINT AND BOOKART COURSE



Lithography, freestyle, linocut, letterpress.


Piotr Kolakowski  July 27.-29. 2018.   10 hours.  kr. 20.000.- 

  Participants become acquainted with various types of print media and produce printed artwork together. Letterpress tools and materials will be put to use as well as linotype and the grandiose art of lithography (stone print) Freestyle printing methods will be applied and students will also be allowed to use old clichés from the museum‘s collection. A joint piece will be produced from text and/or illustrations chosen by the group in sufficient edition size for all participants.    Piotr Kołakowski (born in 1991 in Warsaw, Poland) is a young artist currently living and working in Seyðisfjörður, Iceland - mostly focus on graphic art and art books. In 2015 he completed his Master’s degree at the Department of Graphic Art and Design at Warsaw Academy of Fine Arts, Poland. He also studied Graphic Art at the Royal Academy of Art in The Hague, The Netherlands. BASIC COURSE IN METALCASTING

     Participants learn the basics of metalcasting and making casting moulds.  They will melt metals and cast pieces from tin and bronze.  It is possible for participants to cast replicas of small things they bring themselves (or find).  Guðmundur is an accomplished teacher and supervises the magnificent Blacksmith forge in Akranes Museum.  He has organized the Icelandic Blacksmith Championship Competition for years.  Price  20.000.- krónur all material included. 25% discount for children younger than 18 accompanied by adult.  Starts 1 pm, Friday July 27. at The Technical Museum, Seyðisfjörður.

KNIFEMAKING

MORSE COMMUNICATION



MAKE YOUR OWN MORSE KEY

WHITTLING mini-course 1 (friday)  or 2 (saturday)

      Participants learn the basics of whittling birds from wood, e.g. plover, raven, oystercatcher and redwing. Bjarni will demonstrate how to make swan with the fish-bone method. Open to all.  Price 5,000 kr. Bjarni Þór Kristjánsson was born at Seltjarnarnes 1954 and grew up in an athmosphere of handcrafting.  He has been whittling as long as he can remember. Bjarni teaches in elementary schools and is a popular figure within the arena of traditional handcrafting in Iceland.     Whittling course 1 begins Friday 27. July  at 10 am.  Whittling course 2  begins Saturday 28. july at 1 pm  in The Technical Museum, Seyðisfjörður.

          Participants are introduced to the basics of blacksmithing, the nature of fire, how to care for the fire, use of the anvil and the blacksmith‘s tools.  They try working glowing iron or steel and make a few pieces, e.g. hooks and spike (nails). Middle-age viking type forge will be used – bellows and all.  Price 6.000.- krónur. All material included.

Mini-course 1 begins Friday 27 July at 3 pm and Mini-course 2 begins Saturday July 28 at 9 am.

SUN PRINTING FOR KIDS AND FAMILIES.  


(CYANOTYPE)

Zuhaitz Akizu and Jessica Auer  from Ströndin Studio    July 27. 2018 - 3 hours.  kr. 3.000.-

Sun printing for kids and families. 6 years and up. Children 6-10 must be accompanied by adult.

   Simple, creative and environmentally friendly way to make prints of anything you can think of with the help of the sun! Photographers from Ströndin Studio will provide you with guidance and materials to sensitize paper and print photographic images in a deep blue color (cyanotypes).  

   Cyanotypes are the oldest photographic printing process and was historically used to make images of plants without the need of a darkroom or dangerous chemicals. This technique is the simplest way of composing and collaging images of collected and handmade objects such as flora, old negatives, paper cut outs and drawings. Starts  Friday 27. July 2 pm. atThe Technical Museum, Seyðisfjörður.

19th CENTURY PHOTOGRAPHY 

Zuhaitz Akizu and Jessica Aueri from Ströndin Studio July 28.-29.  2018 - 9 hours.  kr. 12.000.-

16 years and up.

   In this course students will learn and practice 19th century photographic processes. Using a large format view camera, we will shoot and develop images in photographic chemistry. Working with tintypes, a signature process from the late 1800’s, each participant will take home an original and unique photographic object. The printmaking portion of the workshop will also include cyanotype blue printing.

All material included.  The course begins Saturday 28. July at 10 am at the Technical Museum, Seyðisfjörður.          (times: saturday 28. 10am-4pm and sunday 29. 10am to 1pm.)
